James Cunningham Seawall Race
Each year, for the past 41 years, the Lions Gate Road Runners (LGRR) in Vancouver have hosted this 10k race (ok, it’s more like 9.5k) all the way around the historical Stanley Park Seawall. The scenic flat course is the perfect venue for a fast finish (the winner ran a sub 30 minute race) and great first race for anyone interested.  This year was my first year participating in this event -...

Run. Rest. Recover. Repeat. Lulu 26.10.11.
After last week’s intense workout (see Lulu does Fartlek below), we headed out for a nice and easy recovery run last night. With two groups - one completing 5.5k and the second completing 8k, there was lots of time for chatter and catching up. After her impressive half marathon debut at the Victoria Marathon Weekend, Tiffany was back to help lead the 5k group. Her and I lead the group of 4...

Winter Running. And the Cute Gear that Comes with...
Winter running comes with a completely new set of challenges. From runny noses, to dark evenings, to icy streets, to plain old being COLD, running can be tough at this time of the year. One of the best ways to be prepared for winter running is with the proper gear. Over the years, I’ve become quite fond of a few items. He’re my short list of my top 4 winter running components: 1. Run...

To Barefoot or to Mizuno.. That is the question.
A few weeks ago, I got a message from an old friend (now turned Physiotherapist that focuses on running gate and running techniques) that said.. Dude, first of all..congrats for Boston..second of all, why are you not running in racing flats. Get out of those big honking shoes!! Wow. Ok, point taken. Though after seeing many fads come and go, is this one that is legitimately going to stick? I...

Do it Now. Do it Now. Do it Now.
Bobby did it! And I’m so proud of him and to have been a part of his success!  A little background.. Last month, Bobby and I sat down and chatted about his fitness and health goals and had a conversation about things he’s wanted to achieve for a long time, but has never put the effort in to JUST DO IT.  As a personal trainer, I’ve worked with countless individuals itching to...

Lulu does Fartlek.
Yahoo! Last night’s run got our endorphins kicking into high gear! We had two groups out - a 5k and a 10k Fartlek group. Here’s how the night panned out… Linda headed out with Asita, Mimi, Liz, Russ and Sabrina for the 5k. They all came back to the store with a little sweat and no complaints as they all enjoyed a great relaxed run. I’m floored by how much many of these...

Gimme a little Zzzz...
Holy cow. I’m running on adrenaline (literally). The last few weeks of running, cycling, doing yoga, and working out are really starting to get to me! Joined some friends for a longer-than-expected 40 mile mountain climb on Clifford (my bicyclette) yesterday morning and then somehow completed a 12 mile run this morning. By the end of it, my legs were full of lactic acid, I was grumpy,...

Victoria Race Weekend Report
Already one year since I ran Victoria - can’t believe how time flies! This Thanksgiving weekend, I travelled across the water to Victoria for a run free, no pressure, fun weekend to cheer on some friends that were running either the 8k, Half Marathon, or Full Marathon.  … turns out, I am not able to attend a race expo without registering for a race. Thankfully, I was not alone in this...

Lululemon Run Club - Oct 5th
Last night, Linda and I decided it was time to put the runners in our group to the challenge and give them a hill workout! The group was split up into two - the keeners running 8 reps of a 320m hill and the newbies running 6 reps of a 250m hill. Each group averaged about 65 seconds up the hill. Again for this workout, seems as though the lungs were the limiting factor. Seems as though hill...

The Hills are Alive
Tonight I joined a group from one of Vancouver’s newest fitness facilities - Eastside Fitness - as they completed one of their first ever hill workouts! Darnelle Moore, one of the studio’s owners, was leading the workout and climb hills we did! The workout, although relatively low in total volume, was quite challenging. We completed 5 hills in total - 2 shorter hills (approx. 60...

Sweat Once A Day
This morning, Linda Wong and I hit up a hot yoga class instead of hitting up the trails for a run. Since the marathon last weekend, Linda has developed a bit of tendonitis in her foot and has been forced to a take some time off of running - perfect opportunity for a little yoga, right? Right! So we both strolled in to YYoga in Yaletown, Vancouver, for a revitalizing yoga class, only to leave...
